Suzette Foss studied at the University of the North West from 1980 to 1985, where she obtained her Masters degree in Human Physiology. She specializes in pig reproduction physiology and has successfully froze pig spermatozoa. The semen was kept in liquid nitrogen for 18 months after which the semen was thawed and sows inseminated, resulting in the birth of live offspring that were reproductively sound, producing piglets of their own. A first for Africa!
She was a lecturer at the University of the North West followed by 21 years as senior researcher at the Agricultural Research Council where she manipulated oocytes and sperm from different species through in vitro processes to produce blastocysts for transfer into receiver animals. She has produced many scientific articles, peer review articles, popular publications as well as scientific papers presented at the various International Congresses on Animal Production as well as scientific papers produced after on invitation research at the Henry Doorly Zoo ( Omaha Nebraska) in USA. Various training manuals as well as co author of Modern Pig Production.
She was manager of the Artificial insemination Stations at Piggen (Pty) Ltd, in Gauteng, Porcsem Semen in Addo and at PIC Kanhym in Middelburg Mpumalanga. She has 19 years experience in pig artificial insemination. She has has been giving actively pig artificial insemination courses now for 19 years.
